Deadly shooting in investigation outside Cambridge District Court

Authorities say a man who was seeking an extension of a restraining order against his nephew struck him in a Massachusetts courthouse parking lot, then shot him multiple times. The fatal shooting happened Thursday afternoon in the parking lot behind the Cambridge District Courthouse on Mystic Valley Parkway in Medford.Video from Sky 5 showed multiple vehicles surrounded by crime tape, with local and state police vehicles surrounding at least three vehicles.A body was on the ground next to one of the vehicles. Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said Chenghai Xue and his 23-year-old nephew had been at the courthouse for a hearing. Ryan said Xue, 44, was seeking an extension of a restraining order that he had against his nephew.”Following that hearing, both parties exited the courthouse and headed to the parking lot behind the building,” Ryan said. “The suspect then allegedly got into his vehicle, drove at the victim, striking him with the car. The 23-year-old Revere man who was not immediately identified was pronounced dead at the scene. Ryan said authorities were reviewing video footage of the incident, that was not made public. She said Xue did have a license to carry a gun. “To have something like this unfolding, particularly at the end of the day, as people were leaving the courthouse, employees were leaving, other things were finishing up, people making their way to the parking lot is extremely concerning,” Ryan said. Attorney William Barabino had been representing Xue in court before the parking lot incident. Barabino said that Xue’s restraining order against his nephew was not renewed during the Thursday afternoon hearing. Xue was scheduled to be arraigned on murder charges in district court on Friday.
